2016 VICTORIAN SPORT AWARDS NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

MELBOURNE, Victoria, November 22, 2016

Nominations for the Victorian Sport Awards are now open. We encourage all those involved in Victorian sport and active recreation to nominate athletes, administrators, coaches, officials and organisations for outstanding work in sport at community and elite levels. Within the Sporting Capital of the World, the Victorian Sport Awards celebrates those who go above and beyond in their contribution to sport and active recreation.

Launching the call for nominations, Minister for Sport, John Eren said "It is fitting that the nominations for the Victoria Sport Awards open today, 60 years since the Melbourne Olympic Games opened and Victoria took to the world sporting stage”

The 2016 Victorian Sport Awards marks the start of a new era by bringing the event together with the Victorian Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards. The joint awards ceremony to be held in March 2017 presents an exciting opportunity to showcase excellence in community sport and recreation side-by-side with achievements in professional sport.

The awards ceremony draws in more than 550 attendees from sport, recreation and health industries, and boasts recent award winners including such names as Ange Postecoglou, Michelle Payne, Andrew Bogut, Dylan Alcott OAM and Nicole Livingstone OAM. This event is attended by key Victorian sport decision makers along with the Minister for Sport and the Governor of Victoria.

Executive Director of the Victorian Olympic Council, Warwick Waters, said “There were a number of outstanding performances by Victorians at the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Awards provide a fantastic platform to recognise these achievements along with those from all levels of sport, inspiring our next generation of sport and recreation participants.”

Chief Executive Officer of Vicsport, Mark McAllion, said “We’re excited by the joining of the events the result of which will see local community heroes recognised on stage alongside some of Victoria’s sporting icons.”
