Inclusive Sport

People with Disabilities

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 19% of the Australian population have a disability. This is expected to grow to around 25% of the population  by 2025.

Despite people with disabilities comprising almost one quarter of the population, they still are significantly under-represented in all areas of sport.  There are many barriers that people with disabilities face in accessing sport and active recreation opportunities.  Most of these centre around attitudinal barriers.

Providing access opportunities for people with disabilities should be an important consideration for any sport or active recreation organisation.  Indeed, when organisations make changes to better include people with disabilities they often open up to other under-represented groups.  Accessing more members, more volunteers, more sponsors and building a better culture  is a definite rationale for inclusion!

vicsport's role is to support the sporting sector to better cater for people with disabilities. It  can assist in providing links and contacts with relevant peak bodies, and relevant state sporting organisations . We can provide  workshops on many aspects of inclusive sport development.
